What To Consider Before Investing in EV Chargers

3 min read

Investing in EV charging technology for your business parking operation is an exciting new adventure, whether it’s installing a single EV charger or a whole fleet of equipment. Here are some steps that help ensure a successful launch for you to consider before investing in EV charging.Below are 4 things to consider to help ensure a successful EV charging launch.

  1. Determine your EV charging needs.

When investing in EV charging equipment, it is important to narrow in on your unique business needs. This can include increasing revenue, attracting and retaining customers, and more. From there, you can then determine what type of charger is the most suitable, how many you’ll need, and where they should be installed for optimal usage.

  2. Plan your EV charging infrastructure.

Once you determine your goals and the details of what you need and want in your EV charging stations, you can begin the installation process. You’ll need to hire an electrical contractor or partner with an equipment provider that does the installation process.

  3. Apply for incentives.

Installing an EV charging station in your parking operation can be expensive, so it is essential to see if any programs or government incentives are available to help reduce the cost of your upfront investment. The government of Canada currently has two initiatives in place: the Electric Vehicle and Alternative Fuel Infrastructure Deployment Initiative (EVAFIDI) and the Zero-Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program (ZEVIP).Installing EV charging station in your parking operation can be expensive, it is important to see if there are any  to help reduce the cost of your upfront investment. 4. Conduct thorough training

If you have onsite parking staff, it is important to have proper training from your equipment provider, so you and your staff know how to use, service, and maintain your newly installed equipment.

Use this check list to help keep analyze your EV charging project readiness:

  • Do you have short-and/or long-term goals for your EV charging operation?

  • Have you consulted with stakeholders, such as customers, fleet drivers, employees, or the tenant’s board, to determine their charging needs?

  • Have you explored all Level 2 and Level 3 EV charging stations?

  • Do you have a preliminary budget and timeline for your installation project?

  • Have you considered possible locations for your charging site? For example, how many parking stalls could be made available for charging?

  • Do you have a preferred ownership model?
